No one is posting here, so lets get something going!

How about defining what having or being a friend means to you?

My friends are all people I can count on no matter what, even the ones I don't connect with very often. If I need something they all can be counted on to give what they can of themselves.

In turn, my friends can trust that I will give of myself as much as I can for them.

i've been in the states now for 13 years or so; i live in an old graveyard in baltimore; i type slowly; i'm 46; i make stuff; currently i work on
illustrating a book of poetry for kids and i use it as an excuse to not do much else; i love people but i'm alone most of the time; i'm not religious; i have three dogs and four (four! i never saw it coming.) cats; i was born in tel aviv,israel; i was once asked if the bible had been translated to hebrew; i read a lot; in my back yard you will find an old blue car, three motorcycles, cats, dogs, tomato plants, a bunch of dogwoods and other trees, my husband (well, he does get in sometimes),bicycles and about 600 head stones;
i'm a painter; i'm a designer; i love food (food is good for you,eat food everyday!); i don't have children; i don't go out much; i've lived in a few other countries; i think cream cake is good for you; i'm sophisticated; i have a great walk-in closet; i love perfume; i'm messy; as a child
i thought there was a grown up code, i'm still in the dark about that; i love colours; i love shoes; i miss girlfriends; i like to tell people that i used to be a bombshell but i gave it up so the new generation gets a fair chance at it; i'm pretty tall; i stay up late and sleep all morning; i know how to shop, i mean, i really know how to shop! i can't sell anything though; people ask me always where i am from, even when i'm in israel; i have two fireplaces, one of them works; i like to walk barefoot; i like to wear high heels; i love funny; i love music; i love quiet;
i don't like burgers; i prefer to not drive; i love to sleep; i love to dance; i'm slangish but it comes out funny in english 'couse it's not my first language; i make up words; i don't work out; i make good coffee; do you wanna be my friend?

About 2 weeks ago,I was told that my brothers wife Doreen was being hospitalized for Bi Polar(Manic Depressive) disorder and I was very shocked and saddened about it.About 4 days later after growing tired of feeling sad, I sent her a get well card.But not just ANY get well card! I picked out the best get well card I could find and "prettied it up"with lots of shiny stickers of flowers,butterflyes,kittens,and one special sticker with the words "Sending you a little smile,to brighten up youre day.Hope it brings you sunshine,and keeps the clouds away."

Has it been that you invite people to be your friend more often then you are invited? I see people on this site with an INSANE number of friends. I'm not really looking to have thousands of tribe friends. I think it's more about quality than quantity.

But I'm wondering, for everyone out there, did you do more of the inviting to get the number of friends in your network, or was your inbox full of friend requests every time you blinked?

But none of my friends from outside of tribe who I've invited to join have taken me up on it. I guess they're kinda burned out with My Space and Hi5 and Friendster and all the other similar sites. Although this site's a LOT different (and better, if you ask me!!)

I Accept All Friend Invitations

Those who have joined Tribe after December 2005 probably don't know that there was a huge controversy around the fact that Tribe began, on December 20, 2005, to censor "mature" material, saying that it put Tribe in danger of being shut down, thanks to the likes of Alberto Gonzales.

Tribe made significant changes to the ways in which people could find and join tribes, especially if the tribes featured "mature" material. Networks got closed off and privatized, and a lot of people left Tribe because they couldn't conscion the limitations that had been imposed on us.

Before that time, I tended to view "friend collectors" with a bit of scorn, but the changes Tribe made made it more difficult to form connections and networks, so I decided then that I would do as much as I could to help open new networks between people.

Since then, I have had a policy of accepting all friend invitations. I don't always keep all my friends forever, but I have kept most of them, even if we've never spoken since we became friends.

For a number of I don't invite everyone who interests me to be my friend, but I keep my eyes out for interesting people all the time, and there are a lot of faces and names that I recognize after being an active Tribe user for a year and a half now. And of course, if they make the first move, I accept all the time.

So if you want to grow your network fast, I invite you to invite me to your circle.

When you only have 1 friend here, your profile still says "1 Friends." It makes me feel like you cannot have just one friend, like you are never quite proper until you have at least 2 friends and the final S makes sense.

I saw there was only one picture in the gallery and thought that even though everyone has a picture on their profile already it might be fun if everyone put a self pic with their name under it in the photo gallery. I was so excited and my kids even more so. We heard that "Green Day" was visiting. We went to the tavern where they were hanging out late one night. My daughter wanted one of her cd's autographed and maybe a photo. The others were hoping for a signature on their posters and maybe a photo...
no such luck, the bodygaurds wouldn't even let my 13 year old girl ask...
oh well, it was nice to see them hanging out and enjoying our island...

A woman was in bed with her lover when she heard her husband opening the front door.
"Hurry!" she said, "Stand in the corner!"
She quickly rubbed baby oil all over him and then she dusted him with talcum powder. "Don't move until I tell you to," she whispered.
"Just pretend you're a statue."
"What's this, honey?" the husband inquired as he entered the room.
"Oh, it's just a statue," she replied nonchalantly. "The Smiths bought one for their bedroom. I liked it so much, I got one for us too."
No more was said about the statue, not even later that night when they went to sleep.
Around two in the morning the husband got out of bed, went to the kitchen and returned a while later with a sandwich and a glass of milk.
"Here," he said to the 'statue', "Eat something! I stood like an idiot at the Smiths' for three days, and nobody offered me as much as a glass of water."

In order to gain admittance a prospective Heavenly Soul must answer three questions.

3. What is God's first name?

Forrest thought for a few minutes and answered:

This is for all the mothers who froze their buns off on metal bleachers at soccer games instead of watching from cars, so that when their kids asked, "Did you see my goal?" They could say, "Of course, I wouldn't have missed it for the world," and mean it.
This is for all the mothers who have sat up all night with sick children in their arms, wiping up barf laced with Oscar Meyer wieners and cherry Kool-Aid saying, "It's OK honey, Mommy's here."
This is for all the mothers who have had to flee their home in the night without warning and now can't find their children.
This is for the mothers who gave birth to babies they'll never see and for the mothers who took those babies and gave them homes.
For all the mothers who run carpools and make cookies and sew Halloween costumes and for all the mothers who don't.
What makes a good mother anyway?
Is it patience? Compassion? Broad hips?
The ability to nurse a baby, cook dinner, and sew a button on a shirt, all at the same time? Or is it heart? Is it the ache you feel when you watch your son or daughter disappear down the street,
walking to school alone for the very first time?
The jolt that takes you from sleeping like the dead in your bed to a crib at 2 a.m. to put your hand on the back of a sleeping baby?

I think so. So this is for all the mothers who sat down with their children and explained all about making babies. And for all the mothers who wanted to but just couldn't.
This is for reading "Goodnight, Moon" twice a night for a year. And then reading it again, "Just one more time".
This is for all the mothers who mess up. Who yell at their kids in grocery stores and swat them in despair and stomp their feet like a tired two year old who wants ice cream before dinner.
This is for all the mothers who taught their children to tie their shoelaces before they started to school and for all the mothers who opted for Velcro instead.
For all the mothers who bite their lips (sometimes until they bleed) when their 14 year olds dyed their hair green, red or blue.

Dear Son,

Just a few lines to let you know I'm still alive. I'm writing this letter slowly because I know you can't read fast. We are all doing very well.

You won't recognise the house when you get home - we have moved. Your dad read in the newspaper that most accidents happen within 20 miles from your home, so we moved. I won't be able to send you the address because the last Irish family that lived here took the house numbers when they moved so that they wouldn't have to change their address.

This place is really nice. It even has a washing machine. I'm not sure it works so well though: last week I put a load in and pulled the chain and haven't seen them since.

Your father's got a really good job now. He's got 500 men under him. He's cutting the grass at the cemetery.

Your sister Mary had a baby this morning but I haven't found out if it's a boy or a girl, so I don't know whether you are an auntie or an uncle.

Your brother Tom is still in the army. He's only been there a short while and they've already made him a court martial!

Your Uncle Patrick drowned last week in a vat of whiskey in the Dublin Brewery. Some of his workmates tried to save him but he fought them off bravely. They cremated him and it took three days to put out the fire.

I'm sorry to say that your cousin Seamus was arrested while riding his bicycle last week. They are charging him with dope peddling.

I went to the doctor on Thursday and your father went with me. The doctor put a small tube in my mouth and told me not to talk for ten minutes. Your father offered to buy it from him.

The weather isn't bad here. It only rained twice this week, first for three days and then for four days. Monday was so windy one of the chickens laid the same egg four times.

We had a letter from the under-taker. He said if the last payment on your Grandmother's plot wasn't paid in seven days, up she comes.

About that coat you wanted me to send you, your Uncle Stanley said it would be too heavy to send in the mail with the buttons on, so we cut them off and put them in the pockets.

John locked his keys in the car yesterday. We were really worried because it took him two hours to get me and your father out.

Three of your friends went off a bridge in a pick-up truck. Ralph was driving. He rolled down the window and swam to safety. Your other two friends were in back. They drowned because they couldn't get the tailgate down.

There isn't much more news at this time. Nothing much has happened.

Buona Pasqua! Easter in Italy

A huge explosion will be detonated Easter Sunday in front of the magnificent green– and white–marbled neogothic church in Florence's centro storico. Instead of running in fear from a terrorist's bomb, though, thousands of spectators will cheer the noise and smoke, for they will be witnesses to the annual Scoppio del Carro—explosion of the cart.
For over 300 years the Easter celebration in Florence has included this ritual, during which an elaborate wagon, a structure built in 1679 and standing two to three stories high, is dragged through Florence behind a fleet of white oxen decorated in garlands. The pageantry ends in front of la Basilica di S. Maria del Fiore, where Mass is held. During the midday service, a holy fire is stoked by ancient stone chips from the Holy Sepulcher, and the Archbishop lights a dove–shaped rocket which travels down a wire and collides with the cart in the square, setting off spectacular fireworks and explosions to the cheers of all. A big bang ensures a good harvest, and a parade in medieval costume follows.

Tradition and ritual play a strong role in Italian culture, especially during celebrations such as Easter, the Christian holiday based on the pagan festival called Eostur-Monath. No matter what date Easter falls on, there are many ceremonies and culinary customs that are religiously upheld. Some traditions are regional, for instance the art of palm weaving, in which decorative crosses and other designs are created from the palms received on Palm Sunday.

Easter Ceremonies in Italy
At Vatican City there are a series of solemn events that culminate in Easter Sunday Mass. During the spring holy days that center around the vernal equinox there are also many other rites practiced throughout the country that have their roots in historic pagan rituals. In addition, the Monday following Easter is an official Italian holiday called la Pasquetta, so if traveling be prepared for another day of repose.

Tredozio: on Easter Monday the Palio dell'Uovo is a competition where eggs are the stars of the games.
Merano: the Corse Rusticane are conducted, fascinating races with a special breed of horses famous for their blonde manes ridden by youths wearing the local costumes of their towns. Before the race, the participants parade through the streets of the town followed by a band and folk dance groups.
Barano d'Ischia: on Easter Monday the 'Ndrezzata takes place—a dance which revives the fights against the Saracens.
Carovigno: on the Saturday before Easter is a procession dedicated to the Madonna del Belvedere during which the 'Nzeghe contest takes place: banners must be hurled as far as possible.
Enna: religious rites dating back to the Spanish domination (fifteenth through seventeenth century) take place in this Sicilian town. On Good Friday, the different religious confraternities gather around the main church and over 2,000 friars wearing ancient costumes silently parade through the streets of the city. On Easter Sunday, the Paci ceremony takes place: the statue of the Virgin and that of Jesus Christ are first taken to the main square and then into the church where they stay for a week.
In Italy, the expression "Natale con i suoi, Pasqua con chi vuoi" is frequently heard ("Christmas with your family, Easter with your own choice of friends"). Oftentimes, this implies sitting down to a dinner that starts with minestra di Pasqua, the traditional beginning of the Neapolitan Easter meal.
Other classic Easter recipes include carciofi fritti (fried artichokes), a main course of either capretto o agnellino al forno (roasted goat or baby lamb) or capretto cacio e uova (kid stewed with cheese, peas, and eggs), and carciofi e patate soffritti, a delicious vegetable side dish of sautéed artichokes with baby potatoes.

A holiday meal in Italy would not be complete without a traditional dessert, and during Easter there are several. Italian children finish their dinner with a rich bread shaped like a crown and studded with colored Easter egg candies. La pastiera Napoletana, the classic Neapolitan grain pie, is a centuries–old dish with innumerable versions, each made according to a closely guarded family recipe. Another treat is the Colomba cake, a sweet, eggy, yeasted bread (like panettone plus candied orange peel, minus the raisins, and topped with sugared and sliced almonds) shaped in one of the most recognizable symbols of Easter, the dove. The Colomba cake takes on this form precisely because la colomba in Italian means dove, the symbol of peace and an appropriate finish to Easter dinner.

Uova di Pasqua
Although Italians do not decorate hard–boiled eggs nor have chocolate bunnies or pastel marshmallow chicks, the biggest Easter displays in bars, pastry shops, supermarkets, and especially at chocolatiers are brightly wrapped uova di Pasqua—chocolate Easter eggs—in sizes that range from 10 grams (1/3 ounce) to 8 kilos (nearly 18 pounds). Most of them are made of milk chocolate in a mid–range, 10–ounce size by industrial chocolate makers.

Some producers distinguish between their chocolate eggs for children (sales numbers are a closely guarded secret, but the market for these standard quality eggs is said to be shrinking with Italy's birthrate) and expensive "adult" versions. All except the tiniest eggs contain a surprise. Grown–ups often find their eggs contain little silver picture frames or gold–dipped costume jewelry. The very best eggs are handmade by artisans of chocolate, who offer the service of inserting a surprise supplied by the purchaser. Car keys, engagement rings, and watches are some of the high–end gifts that have been tucked into Italian chocolate eggs in Italy.

The Old Book

One of my great loves is used book stores. Actually, its a love for used book sales of any kind. There is something about wandering amidst these treasures that makes my heart leap for joy.

Recently I added two copies of Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet" to my collection as well as a publication of Ralph Waldo Emerson's Essays from 1926.

All it takes for me to be transported into ecstacy is brief moments with either of these diamonds.

Yesterday, I was so enjoying the moment reading Emerson's Essay "Spiritual Laws" that I brought the book up to my face so that I could literally inhale its essence.

From that moment, this poem erupted with incredible force:

Holding the old book open in the center
I bring it to my face and inhale deeply
Bringing me into my center
And my aching history
And my celebratory history
All matched together

And suddenly I am inside basements
And attics with whispered secrets and laughter and discovery

Welcome to Mid Life.......

Midlife is when the growth of the hair on our legs slows down. This
gives us plenty of time to care for our newly acquired mustache.

Midlife women no longer have upper arms, we have wingspans, we
are no longer women in sleeveless shirts, we are flying squirrels in drag.

Midlife has hit when you stand naked in front of the mirror and can
see your rear end without turning around.

Midlife is when you bounce (a lot), but you don't bounce back. It's
more like splat!

Midlife is when you want to grab every firm young lovely in a tube top
and scream, "Listen, honey, even the Roman Empire fell, and those
things will too"!

Midlife is when you realize that if you were a dog, you would need a
control top flea collar.

Midlife is when you go to the doctor and you realize you are now so
old, you have to pay someone to look at you naked.

You know you are getting old when you go for a mammogram and
you realize it is the only time someone will ask you to appear topless
in a film.

Midlife brings the wisdom that life throws you curves and that you're
now sitting on your biggest ones.

Midlife can bring out your angry, bitter side. You look at your
latte-swilling, beeper-wearing know-it-all teenager and think, "For
this I have stretch marks?"

Midlife is when your memory really starts to go: the only thing you
still retain is water.

The good news about midlife is that the glass is still half-full. Of
course, the bad news is that it won't be long before your teeth are
floating in it.

Midlife is when your 1970's Body-by-Jake now includes Legs-by-Rand
McNally (more red and blue lines than an accurately scaled map of the
state of Wisconsin).

Midlife is when you start to repeat yourself and your chins follow
suit.

You become more reflective in midlife. You start pondering the "big"
questions: what is life, why am I here and how much Healthy Choice ice
cream can I eat before it's no longer a healthy choice?
